23° TORINO FILM FESTIVAL

De la famille et d\'un amour immodéré

Country: Italy
Year: 2005
Duration: 67

This documentary studies the life and works of the French director Robert Guédiguian. The stages of the director's life are illustrated through a series of video interviews. Getting his start in cinema, his political involvement, his intellectual roots, the making of his first film, the box office success of Marius et Jeannette, all the way to the creation of the production company Agat. The film dwells in particular on Guédiguian's rapport with l'Estaque, the lower-class neighborhood of  Marseilles where the author was born and where almost all his films were shot. It also concentrates on the "family," the cinematographic family with whom the director works.

"Guédiguian's cinema is a 'time machine,' its themes, like its characters, travel over the course of the years, they are re-proposed, they renew themselves, they are faithful to themselves. The social context is the stage on which Guédiguian's people tirelessly walk, loving, falling down, endeavoring. We wanted to 'freeze' this man's ideology, the integrity of his work, his incredible tenaciousness. We wanted to study this communist heart." (A. Bozzolini, F. De Paolis)
